Wiesbaden MWR continues to expand its wealth of food and beverage options | Article

WIESBADEN, Germany – Providing nutritious food choices, variety, international flavors and a wealth of different options are all part of MWR’s efforts to enhance food and beverage operations in U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden.

“We are constantly looking for ways to improve on how we serve our customers,” said Business Manager Corinna Faulk, of MWR’s Business Operations Division. “(We do this) by offering a variety of diverse food options for the community. One of the ways we do this is by offering quick, healthy and affordable options – whether that is a grab-and-go sandwich, soup of the day or a made-to-order breakfast burrito — we have something for everyone.”

A quick scan of the Wiesbaden Family and MWR home page (https://wiesbaden.armymwr.com/categories/social-and-dining) reveals the range of MWR food and beverage options – everything from Italian cuisine at Little Italy to Asian fare at the Bamboo Asian Restaurant, Latin specialities at Latin Street to traditional American offerings at the Strike Zone.

“We have something for everyone with our array of food and beverage options,” said Faulk. “The Bamboo located at Lower Hainerberg offers authentic Asian cuisine Tuesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Phan family has over 20-plus years of culinary experience offering authentic dishes that are sure to please. If you’re looking for fresh sushi, vegetarian dishes or even catering for a party, they are a one-stop shop.”

Faulk pointed out that the restaurant offers in-house dining, as well as grab-and-go and evening delivery.

“Little Italy Restaurant and Catering Center is our Italian restaurant that offers family dining as well as conferencing and catering packages,” said Faulk.

Little Italy is open Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5-10 p.m.; and on Sundays from noon to 2 p.m. and 5-10 p.m.

“The restaurant offers free delivery service, a restaurant with full service bar, two ballrooms and fireside room to support events of up to 300 guests,” she said. “Rooms are equipped with sound and screen projectors and may be reserved through the catering office on site.”

“My two favorites are Little Italy and the Bamboo Asian Restaurant,” said Steve Sanders, a recreation assistant with Wiesbaden Sports and Fitness, “because I enjoy seafood and Chinese-type food.”

“Our Latin Street, co-located with Arts and Crafts on Clay Kaserne, offers traditional Columbian/ Latin American cuisine,” said Faulk. “They are known for their homemade salsa which accompanies any dish on their menu.”

Latin Street’s hours of operation are Tuesday to Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5-8 p.m.

“They offer an array of tacos, burritos, chirron and rotating daily specials,” Faulk said, adding that Latin Street’s family atmosphere with in-house dining not only features kid’s meals and birthday specials, but also “tasty margaritas for our adult guests.”

“Our newest edition, the Barbell Bistro is co-located in our Sports and Fitness Center here on Clay Kaserne. It is open Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.,” she said, adding, “This one-of-a-kind bistro offers freshly made sandwiches, avocado bagels, daily soup, breakfast burritos, pastries and samosas.”

Faulk said the Bistro is the ideal setting for a specialty coffee or fuel-up following a workout at the Fitness Center. “One of the best kept secrets is their all natural scoop ice-cream and milkshakes — available year around,” she said.

Another MWR food and beverage option is located at the Mainz-Kastel Storage Station – in Building 4019 across from the AAFES Service Station. The District Breakfast and Lunch is open Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and offers breakfast sandwiches, German pastries, fruit cups, salads and specialty wraps.

“They offer in-house dining as well as grab-and-go,” said Faulk, explaining that daily lunch specials, range from spaghetti to rotisserie chicken and rice, hamburgers to chili korma “sure to fit any budget.”

The Wiesbaden Entertainment Center’s Strike Zone snack bar is located in Hainerberg Housing across from the Army Lodge. It is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“This operation offers wings, pizza, hotdogs and an assortment of comfort foods,” Faulk said, and “also has speciality coffees for that afternoon pick-me-up. It’s a great place to unwind and enjoy some family fun with their daily bowling specials. The WEC also offers a full service lounge with weekly entertainment, i.e. karaoke, trivia night and line dancing for guests ages 18 and up.”

“Cem Klein’s Restaurant and Bistro at Rheinblick Golf Course located in the scenic Frauenstein forest is one of MWR’s best kept secrets and only a seven-kilometer drive from Clay Kaserne,” Faulk said. “The French culinary chef (Cem Klein) offers exceptional meals for those looking for a bite after a round of golf or just a family outing. Their team offers event packages and catering for your special occasions.”

The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on the weekends from November through March. It is closed Mondays. During the warmer months (April to October) the restaurant is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekends.

Outdoor Recreation Director Joseph Harris said his favorite MWR food and beverage operation is the Rheinblick Restaurant. “I like the comfort, the vistas and the quality of the food available … especially in the summer months. It’s a really nice place to go after work and on the weekends,” Harris said, adding that besides the expansive golf course, Rheinblick is a great place to start a bike ride or hike up into the nearby forest.

MWR manages two food and beverage operations that specifically serve employees who work on the Dagger Complex in Darmstadt and in the Shali Center on Clay Kaserne – the Dagger Cantina and the Shali Café. Both offer a range of breakfast and lunch items.

MWR is also looking forward to opening a new Fish and Chips eatery on Clay Kaserne.

“This will be the first of its kind offering fresh battered fish and British style “chips” (French fries),” Faulk said. “You can experience the taste of authentic British-style fish and chips without traveling to the UK; how great is that?”
